Let’s Get in Shape

Many folks pick New Year’s resolutions centered on diets or exercise. But are these the right priorities? 1 Timothy 4:8 says, “For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.”

This Scripture was written in a time when people emphasized and glorified the human body. In Hellenistic culture, the gymnasium was a focal point in every city. Youth spent countless hours working their bodies. Physical beauty was adored.

To be clear, the Bible doesn’t deny “some value” in exercise and taking care of your body. But it’s  more crucial that we develop our hearts and souls. Losing 10 pounds, looking buff or developing “six-pack abs” is meaningless if we’re spiritually out of shape or malnourished.

This year, think about devising and keeping a life transforming resolution. Devote time for quiet prayer every day. Commit to read 3 Christian books in 2009. Attend worship services regularly. Join a Bible study group. Get involved in helping other people. Read the Scriptures from start to finish.

You have lots of “training” options. So get and stay in shape this year. Spiritual shape, that is. Nothing is more important.
